Accessibility
We aim for WCAG 2.2 level AA. This is what is in place, what has been checked, and what has not.
What is in place
- Every page works from the keyboard, with a visible two-pixel focus ring and a skip link.
- Every text and control pair is checked by a script against the WCAG contrast ratios, and the build fails if one drops under 4.5 (text) or 3 (control edges).
- Every print has a text description. The labels on the exploded plates are decoration, and are hidden from screen readers.
- Forms have labels, and errors are announced and joined to their fields.
- Reduced motion gives a complete, still site: flat prints, no held scenes, text always present. The same goes if you save data or your device is slow.
- The pages read with JavaScript off.
- The pointer effects (a paint trail that follows a mouse and dries away, a seal pressed by a double click, drops from a pressed button, buttons that lean towards the pointer, a round window on the source photograph when you hold still over a print, a colour that spreads behind a season) exist only for a mouse or pen, never on touch, never with reduced motion, and can be switched off with “Paint trail” in the footer. They never sit above a link, button, field, print or dialog, and they are not read out.
- Photographs open in a dialog that traps focus, closes with Escape and works with arrow keys.
What has been checked
An automated check (axe-core, WCAG 2.0 to 2.2 A and AA) runs at several scroll positions on a phone and a laptop width, with motion on and reduced. Keyboard use has been tried on the main journeys.
What has not
- No screen reader has been used on the site yet, so the wording of announcements is untested by ear.
- Real Safari and a real iPhone have not been tested.
- The Vietnamese text has not been read by a native speaker.
On the walks
Hanoi’s pavements are uneven and many places have steps. Each experience page says what is step-free. Tell us what you need before the day and we will plan the route round it.
Tell us
If something does not work for you, write to hello@net-hanoi.example and say what you were trying to do.
